Establishment of profitable crops that require shade to preserve the Tuiquinque forest, San Marcos
OBJECTIVES:
To preserve and increase the natural forest of Tuiquinque at Tajumulco volcano protected area through forest enrichment with ornamental palms and native fruit producing trees.
This project consists on a series of training workshops on sustainable natural forest management, agroforestry systems with tropical native species of fruit bearing trees, and use of organic farming and soil conservation techniques, at three communities located at the influence region of the Tajumulco volcano protected area.
The use of ornamental palms that have potential market and native fruit trees will facilitate project sustainability at the short and medium term.
This project funds come from project GUA 98 021, UNDP Guatemala support for GEF SGP, B L 2101, Grants.
