Avocado and "pacaína" farming as means of conservation of flora and fauna of the Volcán Pecul rainforest in Nahualá, Sololá
OBJECTIVES
1) To provide a mean to diminish the advance of agricultural frontier through enrichment of small farmer's plots with native productive species.
2)To provide training for stakeholders on sustainable practices of organic farming for their crops, including soil conservation techniques.
This project includes the supply of seedlings of a native palm, pacaína (Chamaedorea elegans), which leaves are exported for ornamental purposes, and of grafted avocado (Persea americana) to enrich the previously established plots of 15 communities small farmers that are members of ADERSO.
Training activities will be conducted to manage all the crops organically, using locally obtained agricultural inputs and soil conservation techniques.
The seedlings will be provided on a revolving fund manner in order to achieve project sustainability and replicate the experience at other associates plots over a two-year period.
