All project activities were carried out successfully. Losses were cut by enforcing stricter quality control. Production was diversified to include soap and kernels from the palmnut for commercialization. 498 families benefited from this project, totaling 2,412 people. 82,465 kilograms of oil were sold during the execution, while 8,473 kilograms of kernels were sold in the 2-year period. The success of the project gained national media attention. Although the increase in income at the time of project conclusion was not fully satisfactory, the number of associates increased from 164 to 369. The most positive impact of the initiative came after the conclusion of the project, when the women babassu palmnut breakers managed to influence local policy to create a law protecting the babassu groves in private property and granting the breakers free access to these trees. A detailed ex-post study about the long-term effects of SGP support was carried out in the area in 2005.
