Successful introduction of a monitoring mechanism of home based energy savings adopted by the school children. A strong awareness campaign conducted at school level on how to take part in the conservation programme, followed by a collection of baseline information, setting of targets, regular recording and scoring based on which best performing students were chosen. Information was regularly updated through the study circles and stored in the central database as part of this monitoring mechanism. Three different types of formats were introduced respectively for setting targets, recording and for computation of final scores which enabled the NGO to recognize the best performing participant students and to make them eligible for the reward scheme.

Two exhibitions were organized using novel approaches where energy savings methods were demonstrated through diagrams, posters and by building models. Students demonstrated simple technologies of how best energy could be economically used/generated etc. Exhibits that warrants mention are - the recoverability of burnt florescent bulbs, energy saving stoves and wind power driven water pumps.The exhibitions,literature and the lectures provided impetus for children to adopt a variety of methods to conserve energy which could be practiced at home as well as in public places.

Most outstanding students (having achieved higher targets) were honored with the awarding of a series of medals. These students were promoted into different categories of medals to achieve higher standards based on targets, innovation and replication. The medal for excellence was awarded to students who reached the set targets. Sixty-three such medallists were recoded in the Year 2000 when the first batch of students were selected for their higher performances. Since the award of medals was a special event and an activity jointly arranged by the CBO and the Provincial Education authorities, the medal invariably carried a strong recognition.

The major output of the second component of the project (Alternative Energy Consumption component) was the creation of a network of 25 women volunteers from five villages adjacent to the Kottawa forest, who installed alternative cooking stoves in their homes. Awareness creation, training, and distribution of fuel wood efficient cooking stoves were linked to the project as a supporting activity.
