Criação de Emas no Entorno de uma Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural
Criação de Emas no Entorno de uma Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural
This project will take place in the municipality of Almas, in the state of Tocantins, in the surroundings of the Minnehaha Private Natural Heritage Reserve. A demonstrative emu breeding unit will be implemented with community participation for species conservation and communication of breeding and management techniques. Food and income will thus be generated for the local community. Environmental education on the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable use of natural resources is also proposed in the project. Personnel will be trained for maintenance and control of the unit. A space will be created to house male and female specimens over the age of four months. A nursery will also be implemented for the hatchlings and the male which hatches the eggs. A corral for capturing emus when necessary will also be installed, as well as shelters. The specimens will also be purchased using project funds.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Construction of the facilities will be the responsibility of the local community?s men, while women will be responsible for manufacturing products. Both will share the responsibility of maintenance of the facilities and care of the animals.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Management of this native Cerrado species will bring food and income to the local families in an activity more integrated with the local environment. Cattle and chicken farming, for example, are exotic activities in the region, and may therefore have negative environmental impacts, which is not the case with the emus. Local farmers often attack these animals, with claims that they raid their plantations. An initiative which can integrate local small farmers with these animals is therefore innovative and important for the survival of these species in the area.
