According to the final progress report submitted by the grantee, the following activities were carried out during execution of this project: construction of a community space; opening and maintenance of 10 kilometers of firebreaks; capacity-building training courses; construction of two access bridges; construction of a camping area. The project was successful in bringing to the communities? attention the danger presented by forest fires, and the techniques for prevention and combat were also successfully absorbed. Coordination between this project and another SGP Brazil approved project of Emu raising existed and helped in the awareness-building process. Access roads were blocked due to heavy rains, causing some difficulties for the project crew. The installation of a large international gold-mining company in the region also attracted the attention of many of the community members previously engaged in the project, through promises of easy wealth. Poverty in the region makes conservation activities very difficult, since human survival outweighs environmental conservation in such dire circumstances. SGP Brazil learned the lesson that, when acting alone, it can assist in the construction of eco-social capital, but cannot insure sustainability in isolated populations. Other sources of funding are essential, including government support.
