Acquisition of knowledge and techniques for controlled use of fire in the municipality of Almas, state of Tocantins, prevention and combat of forest fires are the goals of this project. The following procedures for allocation of human resources, materials, and training were adopted, destined to the use of techniques and methods previously applied in Cerrado areas: fixed vigilance system with towers and lookout points located in strategic points; mobile vigilance with a car; radio communication system; permanent environmental education aiming at prevention; periodic training for the monitors; acquisition and maintenance of fire fighting equipment; community participation for operation; production of video and brochure for dissemination in the local community. Communities inhabiting the surroundings of the reserve will have a crucial role in the success of this initiative.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Natural resources are a collective heritage. Recognition of the economic value held by these resources begets the need for management and rational use to insure sustainability. The conservationist conscience brought to the community by this project will make alternatives available in the future for economic use of these resources with reduced impact on the environment.
Capacity - Building Component
Representatives from the local communities will become fire fighters through the training offered in this project. Theory and practice will be covered in prevention and combat of forest fires.
