The Centre for Alternative Agriculture of Northern Minas Gerais is a non-profit civil association, made up of small farmers from the region. It was founded in 1989, and has the contribution to the strengthening of the small farmer organizations as its main objective. Their work with processing, improvement, and commercialization of the small farmers? production began in 1996. This project, along these lines, yielded the following results: constitution of a network of local small farmers; implementation of the agroindustrial unit for native fruit pulp extraction; construction of a logistic strategy for transportation of the raw materials from the scattered properties to the processing unit; organic fruit processing; commercialization of the processed fruit pulp; generation of income and employment in the rural areas; value-added to the products; establishment of a niche in the market for these products; implementation of a rotating fund for the activity. The success of the project is unquestionable, and the increase in conserved areas in the properties of the fruit suppliers is evidence of that. The productive capacity of the producing areas is, of course, respected, and planning of the production is made accordingly. Byproducts are used to feed animals, reforestation, and irrigation. Self-esteem in the smallholder families is high, and the different cultural backgrounds provide a wealth of experiences which are brought together with a single goal of conservation and sustainability of traditional cultures.
