Organic farming and home garden development of women farmers by Ruhunu Gemi Kantha Sanvidanaya
Rationale, objectives
Large number of youth is unemployed in the Kumbuk ara village. Although farming is predominantly their livelihood, some have resorted to other labour work.
This project seeks to introduce organic farming, for domestic consumption and since there is a great demand for organic food, it is aimed at generating income by sale of the products.
Activities, groups involved
Encourage organic methods of home garden cultivation of women agricultural producers, encourage the women of the poorest category to resuscitate home garden cultivation to ensure sustainability and better quality of life.
Develop 50 model home gardens in the village. Promote use of organic fertilizer among the 50 families.
Provide technical assistan
Improve the nutrition standards of 50 families to a prescribed level within the 2 years of the project, by conducting awareness programmes on food preparation and usage.
Promote savings and revolving credit schemes within the CBO
