- Nine (9) training classes in techniques in growing mushrooms and producing microorganism fertilizer from coffee covers were organised (45 technicians trained and 350 participants received trainings)
Cultivation of coffee, rice, maize was the main career. Coffee in Buon Me Thuot was mainly Coffea robusta, besides Coffea arabica and Coffea excelsa. The employee were the Ede ethnic people, the Mong people, the King people... and most of them had low levels of education.
Mushroom cultivationa and fertilizer processing for plants provides the necessary benefit to the community. The project helps communities in Buon Ma Thuot to raise awareness about mushroom farming methods to increase people's income.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Ethnic communities in Buon Ma Thuot included the Ede ethnic people, the Mong ethnic people and the King peole, most of whom have low levels of education.
Project sustainability
Technicians and local community have acquired the techniques to grow mushrooms and produce bio-fertiliser , making good use of the raw materials of coffee covers readily available in the local area , increasing the nutrition for the family meals, likely to create some income for the community, providing employment in leisure time for farmers and contributing to poverty alleviation.
§ The main project participants and beneficiaries ( Farmers? Association in Ban Me Thuot city, Hoa Thang and Eatu Communes, the local government, and the community in the two communes of Hoa Thang and Eatu) were aware of the importance of enviromental protection and natural resources for the socio-economic development and sustainable development in the local area.

These organisations have built collaborative relationships with Hanoi Biological Association in the implementation of environmental projects.
Notable Community Participation
The project focused on the participation of the community.
Replication of project activities
The project model has potential for replication. During its implementation, it gained the attention from the mass media : VTV 2 broadcast and introduced the model of mushroom growing of Hoa Thang commune on VTV 2 channel many times in various months of 1999 and 2000. After that, other places in the country such as Vung Tau, Ba Ria, Quang Ngai, Tuy Hoa, Binh Dinh, etc sent letters to Farmers? Association in Ban Me Thuot to learn about this technique and the Farmers? Association has shared the experience with them. Vietnamese Agriculture newspaper, Issue 65 dated June 16, 1999 also published an article on the introduction of the project model results. In addition, the proejct has attracted the attention of the Mushroom Centre of Agricultural Genetics Institute affiliated with MARD and the Mushroom Centre of University of Natural Sciences
Farmers? Association in Ban Me Thuot city has collaborated with technicians in Hoa Thang and Eatu communes in continuing to grow mushrooms (Level 2), to provide microorganisms for the production of microorganism fertilizer for the community, to give technical support the community covers
Gender Focus
The project would create jobs for ethnic women
Project Results
§ Nine (9) training classes in techniques in growing mushrooms and producing microorganism fertilizer from coffee covers were organised (45 technicians trained and 350 participants received trainings).
§ The project transferred techniques in growing mushrooms and producing biofertiliser from coffee covers for technicians in Ban Me Thuoc city, focusing on capacity building and enhancement for technicians from Farmers? Association of Ban Me Thuot and Hoa Thang commune and the communities in the two communes of Hoa Thang and Eatu communes. The participants were able to grasp the techniques and they have started producing mushrooms and micro organism fertilizer.
§ The model of producing mushrooms and biofertiliser from coffee covers was piloted in Hoa Thang and Eatu communes. 59 households participated in mushroorm growing. 920 tube of mushrooms (Level 1) and 1,100 bags of mushrooms (Level 2) and 2873 bags of mushrooms (Level 3) were provided to the participating households.
§ 47 households participated in bio-fertiliser production. 3694kg of coffee covers were used and 2120 kg of mushrooms were produced. The fertilizer had been used for coffee, papaya, tea and vegetables.
§ The community has actively participated in producing mushrooms and they have grasped the basic techniques. Most participants, after training, knew how to grow mushrooms and they have harvested . The mushroom productivity was generally good, from 0.4kg to 0.6kg/1kg of coffee covers. However, some actions have not met the technical requirements, such as packaging level III when the raw products had high humidity and this had made it impossible for the mushrooms to develop down to the bottom of the bags, the stalls from growing mushrooms were not well designed to allow enough light for the mushroom when they developed ; the early hanging of the bags of mushrooms had led to limited development of the mushroom stalks ; the untimely slit of the mushroom bags limited the size of the mushrooms.
§ A competition was organised for pupils in Nguyen Chi Thanh Junior High School in Hoa Thang commune to learn about environmental issues with the participation of 1,500 pupils and teachers in the school.
§ The project provided 1,560 copybooks with pictures and messages on environment for the pupils.
