Biodiversity conservation project in Van Long, a local nature reserve
The project meets the goal of the GEF/SGP by contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources and the riverine wetland ecosystem of Van Long, a local nature reserve in Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh Province. Due to the community low environmental awareness and low standard of living, the local community has overexploited the Reserve resources for their daily livelihoods, resulting in the biodiversity loss and deforestation. In addition, illegal hunting from local residents and outsiders is also a big problem in the area and a major threat to biodiversity conservation. Although the Province has designated the area as a local nature reserve, there is very limited investment in the Reserve management and protection. The project will develop a management model which promote the community participation in establishing and strengthening the management and protection of a local nature reserve. Through its activities, the project aims to raise community environmental awareness, to establish a commune management authority and build capacity of the local communities and leaders in nature reserve management, and reduce community pressure on the Reserve resources by creating alternative livelihoods for the local community, hence contributing to poverty alleviation in the area.

Capacity - Building Component
? Organize technical training classes include 50 households for 50 people, 2 times for 2 days.
? Organize training on conservation area management and management of ecotourism activities in conservation areas for 25 people in 10 days ( 5 days/course, 2 course)
? Organize a trip to visit the management model of Cuc Phuong National Park for the local authorities representatives, to sub-district management, environmentprotection team and project management board.
? Organize a workshop with the theme of promoting the role of community in the management of conservation area of Van Long
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
? Van Long is a local nature reserve in Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh province.
? Van Long have the advantage of a natural landscape and its unique history. It is located on the tourist routes of Cuc Phuong National Park so Van Long have the big opportunity to develop its eco-tourism potential, bring the economic benefit to the localty.
? Main aIncome of local people comes from: Rice, grazing, exploitation of natural resources from the reserve. However, the People?s Committee of Ninh Binh province planned to established Van Long Nature Reserve so the entire area of rice cultivation of the two villages T?p Ninh and Thanh Vu (about 25ha) have been withdrawn. The competition for arable land and grazing land of the community became more serious, putting negative pressure of community on to the nature reserve was increasing.
? Average income per capita is low, it?s about 60,000 VND per people per month.
