Providing Innab Al-Kabear village with electrification by promoting solar and wind energy technology.

The project promots the application of hybrid system of solar and wind energy for domestic and public electrification in the boarder village in Innabl Al Kabear in Hebron in the southren area of the Palestinian Authority.The project enables 10 houses of 64 inhabitants, the mosque and the school to use 24/h eclectricity services as a sustainable alternative to the old deasil generator. Also, the project gives a special focus on raising community awareness on energy effeciency and saving techniques and peovids training on system manitenance for members of the community committee.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

The project formes a community committee of 7 members who facilitates the community contribution through providing the needed piece of land for building the sattion, getting the approval of the land owners to allow for the electerical network to bypass through their lands, paying the amount of NIS 9000 for house connections,digging holes for fixing the electricity columns.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project provides access to more effective energy source by altering the use 3/hours a day diesel generator and installing 24 /hours solar/wind source of electrification. Which enable the villagers to store their food in a healthy condition, use internment of education media i.e. TV / radio. GEF/SGP also helps to draw the attention of other donors to contribute to the baseline development needs of establishing water-harvesting unit.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project targets small Bedouin community living since 1948 in Annab Al Kabear in the northern area. This area is a boarder and front line village with Israel.

There is one women represented in the community committee of 7 members

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Three meetings are regularly held to raise the community awareness to the economically of environmental feasibility of the new technology. Several meetings are also organized to raise the awareness of the women of the efficient ways to use the new electricity sources

Project Results

Environmental Benefits: This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the community?s reliance on diesel and kerosene for energy services. Currently, 80% of the community?s energy needs are met by the new alternative solar-wind hybrid system which produced up to 17-18 kW. 10 families of 100- person Bedouin community in Innab AL Khabear village benefited from the system.
Health: The introduction of the renewable power system has allowed the community to operate five refrigerators for 24 hours and refrigerate food and medicine items on a more regular basis.
Education: Improved children?s ability to study and learn by increasing their study hours at night.
Security: With lighting, community members feel safer moving around at night.
Information access: The new power system enabled the community to access television and radio, thereby improving their connection with outside world.
Capacity development: The grantee held workshops for women and members of the village council. They trained them in understanding which appliances use the most energy, and how to choose energy saving ones. They also learned how to use devices that measure the electricity used by individual devices in their houses so they can know how best to conserve energy. Additionally, the community formed a five?member committee which included one woman to facilitate cooperation between the grantee and the community and took the responsibility of running and maintaining the system.
Gender: Women in the village were given further concern in the community committee membership and the involvement in the workshops since they are the primary users of the electrical appliances.
