Project Results
The project was provided in the village 4000 meters of pipe with differing widths along the main walking route. The sewage treated through filtration system developed by TUBITAK.
A tangible output of the project was the construction of waste water system (3850 meters of main canals, with 22 manholes built, all houses renewed their toilets and connected their waste water pipes to the main canals) and three natural filtration ponds. Moreover, there was a community orchard where 1000 trees planted built down next to the filtration ponds. The aim was to irrigate these trees with the treated water before it flow to the dam reservoir. Another tangible output was the trained Community members, who were taught on maintenance of the filtration pond with the necessary equipment to clean and maintain the ponds, the pipes as well.
As the men of the community were away for seasonal jobs, the women often provided the necessary labor for the project. Therefore, there were separate meetings organized for women by TKV. During these meetings, women had opportunity to discuss several issues on their daily living and consulted a home-economist whenever they needed. They are not responsible for the maintenance of the filtration pond; however, they say ?if we have to take care of the filters of the pond when the men all go away, we can.?
The 86 households were all directly benefiting from the natural filtration system. TKV delivered awareness raising seminars on health and personal hygiene, environment and waste waster, and training on maintenance of waste water and filtration system to a total of 68 member of the village community. In addition, the project presented to Duragan authorities a working waste water and sanitation model that could be used in other villages, too.
Hacimahmutlu community was the most important partner in developing and carrying out the GEF/SGP project. The local community donated land, some materials (i.e timber for manhole covers) and all of the labor requirements.
Public participation was very well planned at project preparation and implemented. Establishment of the Village Council was one of the good initiative for public participation. The training and education activities were carried on environmental issues, specifically on environmental health, sanitation and personal hygiene.
The local women participated during planning and implementation stage and their life conditions were improved. Moreover, the environmental conditions improved in the village and its vicinity. Nearby villages motivated for similar projects put request of the same model.
The level of awareness was increased in the village. The media coverage was good, including national television channel (TRT) and gained compliments from government agencies.
In 2005, the waste water system and natural filtration pond system is still working. The Community noted they did not have any problem with the treatment of the waste water. The only problem the Community complained was the bad smell from the filtration pond especially during autumn. However, as one elder woman expressed "compared to the previous smell we encountered in the village, this is nothing. Only when you go nearby, you get disturbed but since it is very far away from the village, we do not suffer from bad smell in the village."
The waste water system is maintained by the Community. The Community stated they had to renew the pipes of the drinking water system more, since they were closer to the surface and would emerge out of the ground whenever there was heavy rain. However, with the waste water canals they said they have not encountered any problems. This was because pipes with a lifetime of 150 years were used to ensure the Community would not worry about problems of the waste water system. The Community regularly cleans the filter in first filtration pond and the whole system is working without any problem.
Although it was initially designed that the waste water infiltrated would be re-used to irrigate the orchard down next to the filtration ponds, the Community never used the water for that purpose and let it flow away. One of the reasons for this was that the Community did not need extra water for irrigation. One member of the Community who was also involved in Project Council said "We know re-using that water flowing from the filtration pond is not dangerous; just the contrary, it is nutritious for the orchard. They (TKV) told us that and we believe them, but it still feels strange to think about it. We could not get used to the idea".
In 2000, TKV published and distributed a report about the Hacimahmutlu community and their cooperative work. Although the report, titled "A Success Story", is useful, it is not readily available for the wider public.
