Small Islands Sustainable Development Program (LUZON)
The project intends to do improvement of the quality of life in Agutaya Island, Palawan while conserving natural integrity through effective local governance, resource management, economic enhancement, and basic social services. A cooperation between a NGO Foundation and a small island local community towards improving the quality of life in Agutaya Island, Palawan while conserving natural integrity through: effective local governance; project resource management; enocomic enhancement; and basic social services. SGP provided funding for the biodiversity conservation while ASF supported the other components (i.e. capability-building, community organizing, livelihood, etc). The project was able to introduced environment-friendly and appropriate fishing technologies (i.e. installation of harong, a local fish congregating and ensnaring device).

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Extensive participation of fishing communities in protecting municipal waters against illegal fishing and big trawlers and conserving marine life in the small island. Residents likewise are involved in the actual implementation of the following activities: nursery establishment, mangrove replanting, and the installation of harong, an old fishing device made of bamboo poles which deter big trawlers from catching fish within municipal waters.
