Sustainable Management of Coastal Resources and Seaweed Production in Siargao (MINDANAO)
The project is about erstablishment of a sustainable and competitive seaweed farming industry in Siargao Island, with the end view of providing a sustainable source of income to fisherfolk and establishing a natural mechanism for the protection of the marine-based environment. A joint project of GEF SGP and Land Bank of the Philippines, the project involved the establishment of a sustainable and competitive seaweed farming industry in Siargao island. LBP provided the organization with a loan for the seaweed production while the GEF SGP provided a grant for the coastal conservation activities. The project was able to: provide a sustainable source of income for the fisherfolks and establish a natural mechanism for the protection of the marine-based environment needed to sustain the main fishing activity.
