Sarangani Coastal Resource Development and Management Project (MINDANAO)
Sarangani Coastal Resource Development and Management Project (MINDANAO)
In 1998, the SCFI continued the activities started by the Mahintana Foundation in Baybay Kawas with the best of intentions and a strong resolve to improve the initiatives made and the gains derived from previous efforts. Thus, the Sarangani Coastal Resources Development and Management Project (SCRDMP) was born. This time, Purok Lago was included in the project.

The project's objective was to conserve, rehabilitate, protect and manage the marine resources of the municipality of Alabel, particularly along the coastal waters of Purok Baybay and Purok Lago of Barangay Kawas. In addition, the provisions for the capability-building and training were also included.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Although limited, women participated in protecting mangrove areas, financial management, and in dried fish vending. A women's group - Baybay Kawas Women's Association - was re-activated during the project. With the same vigor, they implemented the other activities. They put up the fish sanctuary, installed artificial reefs, and strengthened the Bantay Dagat organization which was tasked with policing the coastline of Kawas against illegal and destructive fishing activities.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
An IEC campaign was conducted to make community residents aware of the global environment, particularly the marine environment.
