Address soil erosion and dessertification through afforestation on a beach front in Nagarkovil- Jaffna by Ootru Organization
Rationale
Energy requirements of the communities in the Jaffna district are mainly met by burning of firewood.
Many valuable deep rooted trees are removed as a result.
The erosion rate in the sandy tracts due to wind, is very high.
A dense tree cover is required to stabilize the soil.
Objectives
A targeted extent of 40% of the land area in the district to be brought under the afforestation project.
Activities
Establishing plant nurseries, replanting arid zone in beach areas with casuarina mainly as a buffer, community awareness
Plantation of deep rooted trees such as Palmyrah, Tamarind, Margosa, Casuarina etc. identified as suitable depending upon climatic conditions of the area, type of soil, depth of water table, economical value etc.
Plantation of green manure crops to meet in part the requirements of natural fertilizer.
Groups involved
525 families in the Nagarkovil village.
