Compost Making and its Application
This project aims at demonstrating the feasibility of making organic compost and its application to growing vegetables. It will imply composting locally available wastes using relatively simple technologies to produce high quality composts that will be applied to agricultural land at Belle Mare. It will demonstrate that using composts would lead to a reduction in the use of chemical fertilisers and hence show small-scale approaches to preserving the fertility of land and enhance organic farming methods. The grant allocated by the GEF/SGP will be mainly used for setting up a demonstration plot of organic compost making at the National Federation of Young Farmers Club at Belle Mare, for constructing rotary composters to be set up in the backyard of 30 families at Belle Mare and for training a large number of people on compost making and monitoring.
