Training programmes in bio-diversity monitoring techniques and extension of bio-diversity monitoring and habitat enrichment programme in Sigiriya by Centre for Eco-cultural Studies

Training NGO, professionals, high-school students in bio-diversity techniques, producing mobile excibit unit and publishing of bio-diversity monitoring manuals, construcion of enviromentally friendly accomodation facilities, establishment of interpretation centre. Training of students, NGOs and local government officials in biodiversity monitoring and habitat enrichment is a felt need not only for this district but for the entire country. The NGO will concentrate in one district for this project as the capacities have to be built for a wider programme.

Project Results

Setting up of the Field Station with accomodation & other facilities for 35 participants - for training and extension of biodiversity studies and awareness. And also for conducting field based workshops through camps.

Training of over 350 students including high school students, undergraduates, government & NGO partners in biodiversity monitoring.

Production of field manuals and booklets on fauna and flora studies and biodiversity monitoring technical manuals.

Establishment of a permanent study plot (PSP) for studying of biodiversity.

A minimum of 100 NGO representatives, 150 high school students and 200 government officials and others training in basic biodiversity monitoring.

Raised awareness in environment and development policies at local, national and international level for selected participants.

Poster and mobile exhibition unit on the biodiversity conservation of Sri Lanka, highlighting Matale district.

Conservation and protection of suitable habitats, water availability for threatened and endangered species.

Database and inventory of species/habitats and their status in relation to conservation needs, threats and populations in selected areas of the Sigiriya World Heritage Cultural Site.

Initiating of community participation in local resource management and development.
