Assessing and restoring the wild plant species in the coastal sand dunes in the Gaza Strip.

Conducting size distribution study as well as literature review on endemic plant species in the coastal sand-dunes in Gaza Strip in order to classify, identify the most threatened species and device integrated restoration plan in four designated locations that (College of Education, Youth and Sport Camp, Marine forces, Ministry of Agriculture), documenting the outcome of the study in a colored printed booklet and disseminating information collected through workshops, schools/ public seminars and distribution of posters.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Participation for indigenous people is variable between those who helped to collect wild species, restore and maintain the collected of planted species.

Capacity - Building Component

Providing theoretical and practical training for a group of students (6 males and 3 females) in plant collection, identification and classification to enable them to have the basic data about plant taxonomy. Institutionally, GEF/SGP funds supports the development of the PAWCD infrastructure as it is the first grant obtained by the organization.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Publishing the first Palestinian scientific book on the coastal wild plants in Gaza strip is a very valuable scientific addition to the environmental awareness of the male and female school and university students and researches particularly about the endemic plants of the coastal sand-dunes. The project also creates many job opportunities for those who provide support series in different stages of the project. Moreover, some of the restored plants have economic and environment benefit as these are used to prevent land degradation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Raising public awareness on the importance of rehabilitating and restoring the demolished endemic species by publishing brochure (1500 copy) and poster (1500 copy), organizing 2 school competitions for teachers and students in high schools and university on the wild plant, conducting 3 study days for the university employees and 30 lectures for teachers and students for 5000 persons and publishing 500 copies of the book on the sand dunes wild plant and the threaten sp. in Gaza strip. In addition to that inviting journalists and TV to cover some of the project activities i.e. public meeting.

Notable Community Participation

There are 10 partners from governmental, non governmental and community based organizations (Ministry of Agriculture, College of Education, Ministry of Wakf, Ministry of Education, UNRWA, TV, Ministry of Youth and Sport, Marine Forces, Municipality of Gaza and Women Health Center). They play very important role in project planning, implementing, monitoring through providing human resources and microscopes, cameras and premises for hosting workshops. College of Education, Youth and Sport Camp, Marine Forces, Ministry of Agriculture have very special role in providing the land for restoring the threatened sp., irrigation and supervision activities.

Gender Focus

Three undergraduate students have training in plant taxonomy and participate in project implementation. Additionally, the project targets 7girls schools of encourage female students to participate in the competition for collecting the wild species where all the winners are female except one male student.

Project Results

Environmental benefit: The project focused on surveying, classifying and resorting native species in three coastal sites.
Capacity building: Training sessions were conducted for collage students in plants taxonomy and classification. Inter-regional exchange of experience was established to validate plants classification.
Public awareness/ information: The project has applied various information dissemination methods such distributing 1500 copies of brochure and 1500 posters on the wild plants, their classification and threats affecting their sustainability.
Conducting 15 lectures about the project theme and the importance of the wild plants for 1000 high school students in 14 locations. Conducting 3 workshops in 3 restoration sites. Providing incentives for the winners in the wild plant campaign in which several government officials were involved.
