A variety of trees and shrubs were produced over the year, most of which were grown for Arbour Day which was held on 25 November, 1995. However, the feedback from participating schools and citizens determined that fruit trees were preferred. Therefore, the Arbour Day Programme was tailored to provide primarily fruit trees and a few varieties of shrubs.

The National Parks Trust re-organized and improved the Trust's nursery to the level where it is capable of growing approximately 2,000 seedlings at various stages of development at any one particular time. Equipment and supplies have been purchased and the part-time gardener received training from the staff at the Botanic Gardens in Road Town, enabling him to successfully plant seeds and seedlings and propagate other plants and trees.

During the week leading up to Arbour Day, volunteers carried approximately 300 trees to Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and Anegada, whilst the remaining 700 were kept for distribution on Tortola. Notices were placed in the local media regarding Arbour Day and invited persons to collect a tree for planting from one of the various collection points on the Islands. On Arbour Day itself, volunteers from the Department of Agriculture, National Parks Trust and other citizens, manned the collection stations and gave the trees to attendees. A donation of US$2.00 was requested for each plant, which raised a total of US$1,477.00. Approximately 95% of the tress were distributed, with the remaining 5% being distributed free of charge after Arbour Day.

The immediate benefits to the participants and wider community were increased awareness of the importance of trees and the National Parks Reforestation Programme. Since Arbour Day, the Trust's nursery has been visited on an almost daily basis due to sustained interest in the programme.

The longer-term benefits will be enjoyed by future generations as the trees will reduce soil erosion and the negative impacts of climate change. The trees will also improve the aesthetic appeal of BVI's landscape and the fruit trees will bear fruit. This project is a work in progress.
