Sustainable Agricultural Technologies for Rodrigues 1A Solar Photovoltaic System 1B Compost Making
This project aims to provide simple small-scale PV systems for irrigation for community-based farms situated in the re-instated valley of Riviere Banane. Irrigation of the small holdings in the re-instated valleys of Rodrigues remains a major hurdle, especially for women who have to manually carry water from the wells to the plantations. A small submersible water pump will be coupled to a 50-80Wp panel and the system will draw water from 5 metre deep wells and deliver it to the plantations via a garden hose connected probably to a sprinkler. A second component of the project concerns compost making from agricultural wastes for enhancing the yield of the same community-based farms. The grant allocated by GEF/SGP will mainly be used to involve local (Mauritian and Rodriguan) enterprises in demonstrating that simple small scale PV systems for irrigation can be assembled locally. It will also be used, in the second component of the project, to involve local enterprises in demonstrating
