This project aims to provide simple small-scale PV systems for irrigation for community-based farms situated in the re-instated valley of Riviere Banane. Irrigation of the small holdings in the re-instated valleys of Rodrigues remains a major hurdle, especially for women who have to manually carry water from the wells to the plantations. A small submersible water pump will be coupled to a 50-80Wp panel and the system will draw water from 5 metre deep wells and deliver it to the plantations via a garden hose connected probably to a sprinkler. A second component of the project concerns compost making from agricultural wastes for enhancing the yield of the same community-based farms. The grant allocated by GEF/SGP will mainly be used to involve local (Mauritian and Rodriguan) enterprises in demonstrating that simple small scale PV systems for irrigation can be assembled locally.
