A Meliponicultura como Atividade de Desenvolvimento Sustentável na Cidade de Jarim do Seridó (Fase II)
A Meliponicultura como Atividade de Desenvolvimento Sustentável na Cidade de Jarim do Seridó (Fase II)
Stingless native beekeeping advantages will be disseminated by this project, discouraging predatory use of nests, and exposing the profitability of the activity. An environmental education program connecting the environment to the availability of resources for use by humans will encourage formation of a native beekeeper cooperative. Knowledge about the plants used by bees will also be improved, and studies will be carried out about reproductive strategies. Scientific publications are planned. Bee houses will be built for these purposes, where canudo and jandaíra species will be bred in three areas with different levels of conservation. The local small farmers will be invited to participate in all stages, invited by a local leadership. The colonies will be transferred to boxes. At the time of harvest, a technical assistant will train the community, instructing them as to how it must be done. Trees used by the species will be planted in degraded areas. The experience will be disseminated in neighboring communities during scheduled meetings. This project will take place in Jardim do Seridó, state of Rio Grande do Norte.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Native beekeeping will turn the attention of the small farmers from the conventional farming techniques which require the use of fire and is harmful to the environment. This profitable operation will not only generate income for the families involved, but also help in environmental conservation by reforesting degraded areas and keeping the vegetation standing, since the beekeeping activity depends on availability of this flora. Cerrado flowers are too delicate for the Africanized bees, which destroy them. Native bees are smaller, thus preserving the flowers when feeding.
Notable Community Participation
Success in this initiative depends on the adoption of local small farmers of the native beekeeping activities proposed and exposed.
