Activities undertaken: planning for formation of groups; 8 meetings were held; a fish culture course was offered; locations were chosen for nursery and tanks; the tanks were constructed; 17,000 minnows were acquired and transferred from the nursery to the tanks when the weight of 100 grams was reached; collection of buriti and açaí seeds and production in plant nurseries; transplantation of seedlings to areas surrounding the tanks. Integration and participation of the community members was at its fullest. Degraded areas are being recovered, as well as riparian woods. Some problems faced include: lack of water during the summer, need for manual labor, interference by the federal authorities, which fined the organization and prohibited continuation of the activities, with no previous warning or orientation offered; delays in the construction due to the lack of water and rocky soil in the location s chosen; mortality among the minnows was devastating, wiping out more than 90% of the specimens. Proposed solutions include regularization of the construction with the federal authorities, classification of the problems causing death of the minnows, and further training for the participants. Lessons learned far outweigh the positive results achieved by this project. The community has not given up and is planning reformulations to their ideas for a new attempt at sustainable development for the families.
