Support for implementation of agroforestry systems in the indigenous and smallholder extractivist properties is sought with this project.15 local multiplying agents will be trained in the course of 12 months for reaching this objective. 8 agroforestry bees will be carried out with specific Cerrado natural resource management activities, such as mapping of extractivist areas, collection of seeds, production of seedlings and later transplantation to degraded areas, among others. This activity will take place in Western and Southern Maranhão state, and northern Tocantins state in different indigenous lands, including Krahô, Apinajé, and Krikati. Training will be offered to indigenous community members and small farmers. 15 plant nursery managers will be trained to disseminate non-predatory practices in their respective communities. 8 demonstrative agroforestry system areas will be implemented for motivation of the indigenous people and local smallholders. Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Indigenous associations and smallholder extractivist cooperatives will benefit from implementation of this initiative, which will recover degraded areas with permanent reforestation in and around riparian woods areas, which will help improve the quality of the water. Sustainability of the current livelihoods will thus be insured.
Notable Community Participation
Orientation and monitoring will be offered by the grantee, but the community demands will be gathered and brought to attention by the agents trained in agroforestry management. These agents will be responsible for educating their communities in environmental conservation and introducing sustainable practices. The communities, in turn, will be responsible for managing the sustainability proposed by the agents.
