The following activities were undertaken during execution of this project at the Limão-Verde village: preparation of materials for presentation of the project; meeting with community leaders; delivery of equipment and seeds, with verbal instructions for their use; planting of the seeds; preparation of a compost pile. In the Córrego-Seco village, the activities were: training activities in the gardens and implementation of swales; organization for participation in the Cerrado People?s Meeting in Goiânia, state of Goiás; dissemination of information from the Meeting to the community; handcrafts and fruit processing courses; production of seedlings in the recently-finished plant nursery; organic gardening in the gardens of 13 families; search for alternative sources of funding for continuation and complementation of the activities; preparation for commercialization of the handcrafts in Aquidauana; planting of seedlings in the surroundings of the school; meeting with city hall to seek support for the activities; construction of a water tank for supply of the nursery; handcraft workshop covering basketry and use of natural materials; community wide conscience-building activities; orchid production class. In the Taboquinha and Brejão villages, a bamboo handcraft training course was offered. The change in attitude in the community women is visible; they now meet weekly to hone their handcrafting skills, their time is occupied in different activities. Men are making an effort to work in groups and bees. Both men and women have acquired new trust in their skills and abilities ? before the project some were sure that they could not produce handcrafts, but are among the craftsmen/women selling their work in Aquidauana. Talent and creativity have been awakened in the community, which has reduced the use of fire for planting, become more careful in their use of resources such as water and native plant species, nearly eradicated predatory extraction of orchids, and embarked on a reforestation process with the plant nurseries built. Some difficulties faced include the discouragement of some participants when taught of the time necessary for the seeds to become full grown plants, when encouraged to plant native species which they thought were easy to find and therefore ubiquitous, short-term need for generation of income, difficulty in exposing environmentally wrong attitudes taken by superiors, lack of involvement by the chief. Much conscience is considered to have been built, nonetheless, in the community as a whole. Direct benefits to the environment were achieved, bringing this population closer to the environment.
