Diana's Pools Project
The project involves integrated natural resources management and environmental protection integrated with and based on ecotourism in Umzingwane, Matabeleland South province. The ecotourism centres around natural pools which are a tourist attraction. It is envisaged that the full development of the Diana's pools area as an eco-tourism centre will provide an alternative source of livelihood for people.
objectives
-to rehbilitate and conserve sites of naturaland historecal significance in Ward8
-to improve biodiversity conservation through rehabilitation and protection of such areas
-to encourage tourists to visit the watr and improve the livihoods of the community by strengthening tourism in the area.
-to reduce land pressurwe and imprve the condition of the land/soil through tourism promotion as an alternative to cultivation and grazing
activities
-rehabilitation and protection of natural areas in the ward, that is desilting the pools,constructing slt traps, fencing and catchment management workshops
-marketing and advertising of these to tourists
-the development of a ward development information centre.
participants
-the ward 8 community are the dntral participants in the project.This consists of 5 villages.The community members will implement the project, along wih help from the DST. Within each village are the ward and village bsed facilitators who have been trained by DEAP.These people will help mobilise and motivate the community as well a coordinate implementation .The initiative is that of the whole community and women are equally involved.
anticipated project results
-it is hopd that this project will result in ward 8 becoming a prosperous tourist centre with its natural resources and scenic areas restored to their original condition. completion of the project should result in :
1. a profitability run information centre
2. rehabilitated and well protected sites of histrorical , cultural and natural interest
3. tourists visiting the places of interest and paying for the services.
4. villagers employed in the maintenance and protection of sites of interest.
it is expected that the project shall improve the human and ecosystem conditions in the ward. it will restore the people`s confidence in themselves and their traditonal knowledge systems.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
It is the local people who alerted the governing authority on exploitation of the pools as a local touristic resource. They went furthe rto design a programme that encompassed the rejuvination of the local environment. The local people are participating by undertaking various chores including cleaning up the pools, construction of silt traps upstream and through fencing and manning the resources.
