Kuguta Kushanda Project

The need for the project arose from the community `s initiative to improve the environmental status within the area ,as well as to raise the standard of living of the project members.This project therefore aims to conserve and improve the biodiversity through reafforestation, grazing area management and improved land management. the project also adresses the cross cutting issue of livelihood improvement by providing alternative income sources which willallow the community toescape from the situation where they are fprced to degrade their environment to survive.

The objectives of the project are
-to provide water at Ruzvidzo by constructing a dam
-to revegetate the area
-to set up a sustainable grazing scheme
-to improve the livelihoods of the community through improved grazing and establishement of nutrition gardens.
-to encourage indegenous and fruit tree plantation in the area
-to encourage and regreen the scattered areas.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

Project started as a result of the community's initiative to improve the environmental status of the area. The group has spearheaded the whole process of project implementation and monitoring and have mobilised neighbouring communities to engage in similar activities.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The Tandi community has been the key player in implementing the project. They designed their work plan and identified indigenous trees which they planted in their nurseries which thrive well in their area. They have organised field days to raise awareness on their conservation efforts and impart knowledge to other communities.

Capacity - Building Component

The group demonstrates an empowered community which has managed to restore the biodiversity of their area through their concerted efforts. Training in catchment area protection has built their capacity in this regard.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The group has set the pace in terms of awareness raising on how their initiatives contribute to the global environment. As a result, at present there are 20 other groups affiliated to this project who are in the process of replicating what they have learnt from Kuguta Kushanda with the endevour to change the face of their local environs.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project has addressed the cross-cutting issue of livelihood improvement by providing alternative income sources from the sale of fruits, vegetables, timber and fish. The grazing scheme will enable the group to engage in other productive activities which impact on their livelihoods since they will not longer need to spend time herding cattle.

Gender Focus

Women constitute the majority of the group i.e. 90% of total membership and through training, they have been empowered to actively participate in decision-making and actual project implementation. Women have been very enthusiastic since the project also addresses the issue of livelihoods which is one of their major problem areas for rural women.

Project Results

The dam construction was almost completed. However, the major handicap was that it was washed by cyclone Eline. As a result the dam has breached and needs to be repaired. Shortage of water in the dam has affected the level of production in the garden such that it is no longer as successful as it used to be during its implementation phase.

The project co-ordinator has produced a document for supplementary funding and has approached CIDA to assist the project so that the planned gains can be fully achieved and realised.
