Laughing Bird Caye Management Project
Laughing Bird Caye Management Project
Laughing Bird Caye National Park is utilized for activities such as tourism, recreation and research. The lack of a management system has led to abuse and exploitation of this protected area. This comes in the form of illegal use of the marine portion of the National Park by fishermen, the uncontrolled use of the small island by numerous vessels/guides, and the indiscriminate disposal of garbage/solid waste by visitors.

This project?s main goal is to establish a proper management system for the entire National Park. The primary objective includes protecting the natural resources for Belize, specifically for buffer communities. These resources include fisheries resources, biodiversity on the island and the marine environment. This will benefit two of Belize?s largest industries; tourism and fisheries industries, and will contribute to the protection of this pristine environment that was awarded the title of World Heritage Site (WHS).
