Bambaragama watershed protection and conservation of bio diversity by Bambaragama Parisara Sanrakshana Mandalaya
Rationale
As a result of denudation of the catchment, water streams have dried up. Due to this, acute water shortages close to desertification levels result.
Objectives
Protect Bambaragama watershed which is the source of 42 tributaries that feed Kirindi oya and the natural habitat of many varieties of endemic species.
Activities
Protect the watershed, the mainspring of 42 water sources, reforest the area and have public awareness campaigns
Demarcate boundaries of the watershed reservation which has been approved as a protected area.
Establish 7 plant nurseries with local plant species.
Reforest the watershed area.
Soil conservation on the contours through stone walls and planting suitable bush species with people's participation.
Conduct public awareness campaigns, meetings and seminars to promote watershed protection
