Building capacity of fishermen by using an altenative method to sustainable use of fish resources in the middle area of Gaza.

The project helps the fishermen to promote environmental -friendly method of fishing by using special kind of nets by which they alter the trawling with beach pure-seine method. The new method helps to prevent over-fishing of the small generation, destruction of the fish eggs and the extraction of marine phyto-plankton. The project also helps to raise awareness of the marine biodiversity, provide technical assistance and practical training for 40 fishermen on the new fishing method by granting them 20 nets. Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Six workshops are conducted in how to conserve marine biodiversity and the negative effect of the trawling method on marine resources. Also, practical training in side the sea is conducted to acquaint the fishermen on the pure seine method of fishing. Institutionally, Al Tawfiq Association acquires several skills on how to manage a project based on participatory approach.

Gender Focus

The project did not focus on the women participation since fishing is merely a male dominant profession.

Notable Community Participation

The project forms a committee of seven fishermen to serve as a consultative and linking body between the fishermen and AL Tawfiq Association. In the project development stage, needs assessment survey is conducted in Al Nussirat area to determine the potential project location where the possibilities and risks for implementation are discussed. At the starting up phase of the project, an introductory workshop is organized to announce the project launch, present its activities, overview the fishermen expectations and ensure their commitment

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project provides %90 of the cost of 20 pure seine nets for 40 fishermen to encourage them to adopt the new fishing regulation stated by the recurring Fishing Law # 37. By using the new method, the project enables the fishermen to fish more and increase their income of $200 by %50 in the medium and long run.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project works with small group of 40 fishermen who are part of the total number of 2200 fishermen work in Gaza. For most of those, fishing is a family inherited work that reflects the culture of the extended families in which the grand fathers work on fishing since ages. The fishing is mainly associated with the community groups live near the coastal area of the Mediterranean basin of Gaza.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Through brochure, posters and newspaper articles, the project helps to raise the fishermen awareness on the importance of applying the new fishing method to contribute to the sustainable conservation and management of marine resources which eventually leads to increase the fish reserve and maintain the fish habitats in the Mediterranean basin.

Project Results

Environmental benefit: Fishermen got more aware of the problems that threaten the marine environment and the damaging impact of their fishing practices on the coastal habitats, eggs and ultimately fishing generations.
Capacity building: 40 poor fishermen had their capacities enhanced through (training and coaching) on environmentally safe fishing methods. They got also aware of the fishing law and perceived the consequences of their fishing practices on the sustainability of the marine resources. The project worked with close partnership with the designated Authority for Marie Resources to pave the way for policy influence and possible replication in the future.
Improved income: By using alternative fishing nets, the fishermen recorded remarkable increase in the fishing product, thus significant increase in their daily income.
