Increased Production and use of Improved Charcoal Stoves and Ovens for Improved Energy Services, Environmental Conservation and Income Generation, Tanzania Traditional Energy Development and Environment Organization (TATEDO)

-To enhance accessibility to improved energy services for socio-economic development and environmental conservation for the majority of the urban and peri-urban people through increased production and use of improved/fuel efficient stoves and ovens.
-To popularize application of low carbon fuel efficient cookstoves and ovens as an effective measure in conserving the environment.
-The project will initially cover the city of Dar es Salaam and Kibaha district in coast region. In future, the project will spread to areas with high population density relative to natural woodfuel resources such as Shinyanga, Mwanza and Kagera.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

(1) Community members especially women and Youths trained on how to manufacture low carbon cookstoves. (2) Community members trained on how to establish and run viable low carbon cookstoves manufacturing.

Gender Focus

(1) Fuel efficient cookstoves reduce consumption of fuelwood. this relieves women from fuelwood collecting tasks.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

(1) Wide adoption of fuelwood efficeint technologies reduce pressure on natural forests for fuelwood; (2) The low carbon characteristic of fuel efficient stoves reduce levels GHG emmissions (3) Less consumption of fuelwood generates income through cost saving.

Notable Community Participation

Community participation in awareness raising seminars and exhibitions on the importance of low carbon cookstoves for mitigation of climate change.

Project financing was done jointly by SGP and NGO.
