Mangrove Conservation in Bais Bay (VISAYAS)
The project is about mangrove ecosystem conservation through reforestation using local mangrove species, education and capability building of a coastal community. The project also included a livelihood component to directly address poverty concerns. The Board of Gabayan Foundation Inc. handled implementation and management of the project. A full-time community organizer was hired for the project. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was tapped for the technical assistance in mangrove planting activities. Project experience showed that: mangrove monocropping promoted pest development, hence, similar projects should use more than one species; mangrove rehabilitation should always look into issues of land and resources control - while the project partners have the capability to make decisions, the partner community has limited area where the implementation of the project owns big haciendas, and has control in the area.
