Promotion of Watershed Area Sustainable Management
Promotion of Watershed Area Sustainable Management
The project location is a watershed area under the eco-system of the greater Mekhong River. In the location ,there are 8 communities comprising the Thai natives and 2 other minority groups, i.e. the Lahu and the Karen. The mid 70?s had witnessed a drastic change in agriculture in the area. Clearing national forest for mono-cash crop and applying chemical substance to boost up the yield has been become a normal practice. During the mid 80?s , three food processing factories had been built to accommodate the production from the field. These factories had drained untreated waste into the rivers where the communities had staged a protest.

In order to reduce and solve the environmental problems , the following approaches are to be introduced. Firstly, at an individual or family level, the economical self-reliance must be realized through group process. Secondly, revival of the long traditional community relationship with environment must be initiated, starting from communities to networks and to wider outside group.

Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):

1.To promote and materialize a sustainable pattern for watershed area management
2.To build capacity on environment among CBOs? and their networks
