Kakrebihar Biodiversity and Culture Conservation Project
Kakrebihar as the name suggests (in Nepali) looks like a cucumber shaped structure and covers an area of 167 hectares of forested land consisted of Sal (Shorea robusta) and Pine (Pinus roxburghii) as the major species. Aside from the plants and animal biodiversity, this area has an archaeological and cultural significance. The successful implementation of the project will ensure conservation of the historically important archaeological heritage, the culture of the ethnic Tharus, and its environment and the biodiversity. The project will also support the local communities' endeavour in the conservation of the fast depleting deer population in the area and in the promotion of local eco-tourism.
Since the inception of the project, there has been a collaborative efforts in conservation of Kankrbihar. Department of Archeology (DoA) has excavated the temple ruins and unerthed 2026 exquisite ancient artifacts. Likewise, Ministry of Population and Environment (MoPE) has supported to fence the area, construct fireline in the forest forest area. Department of forest is involved in plantation and protection of the forest. The project has initiated innovative approaches to mobilise the community. Goat and Pig support to all, community farming and rope making are new initiation that are undertaken to uplift their economic status.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Community groups and/or organisations are of three kinds ? men, women and mixed of men and women. Formation of the groups is solely depended upon the interest and decision of the community members themselves.
Out of the 23 CBOs, 6 are women, 7 are men and remaining 10 are mixed CBOs. Likewise in the leadership role, 8 CBOs have women chairpersons and 7 CBOs have women managers. Out Of the total 619 members, 298 members are women. A rope making machine have been supported to women CBO and a Rope Entreprise Management Committee compriseing 7 women members has been formed to operate the rope entreprise.
Capacity - Building Component
Community-based groups and the grantee NGO mutually identify and organise training programmes for selected community members. Exchange visits and or study tours for the community members to selected project sites are organised in order to observe and share each others experiences and knowledge.
