Conservation of Malwattu Oya Site by Derana Community Development Foundation
Rationale:
This area being one of religious and historical importance, there is a constant demand for bamboo trees for reconstruction work in the Buddhist monuments, dagabas etc. They are brought from outside and its use is both costly and detrimental to the environment.
Objectives, benefits:
Conserve the biodiversity in the Malwathu oya site and plant bamboo trees on the banks.
Remove the toxic pollutants in the waters of Malwathu oya.
Improve the soil quality in the adjoining areas.
Retain environmental equilibrium through sustainable use of the resources available in the area.
Provide livelihoods to members of the community through the compost-making project.
Set up nursery and net house, compose making using water hycinth; plant trees along the Malwathu river; establish demonstration bamboo grove; give publicity through media for the project activities

Notable Community Participation
Area villages, youth, university students, school children participate by planting bamboo trees at the either side of the Malwattu Oya. People form remote areas also participate by supplying banboo seedlings to the site area.
Two environment camps will be organized for awareness raising and for helping clear and plant at the site area
