Promote the use of traditional knowledge of local dairy farming and use of alternative energies by Community Oriented Resource Exchange

Establish 20 demonstration biogas units and 100 cowsheds for selected farmers of the area. Form a network of 200 farmers with specific knowledge on traditional dairy farming, print a booklet on the subject for distributioon. The project will mainly concentrate on the promotion of the use of renewable energies, establish a inforamtion exchange unit, promote the dairy farmers group, and do a survey on the knowledge and proctises of traditional local dairy farming methods. Promotion of traditional cattle rearing helps develop farming activities, provide additional income to the farmers and promote the use of organic fertilizer in sustainalbe farming. Bio gas will be available for cooking purposes, this is considered a significant benefit.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Bio gas will be available for cooking purposes. This is considered to be a significant benefit, shared by the women which reduces the burden of household chores.

Project sustainability

Immediate Results of this project, themselves, are self-sustained. The direct beneficiaries are responsible for maintaining the physical products of the project, as the beneficiaries own them and will benefit from them. Also, the local practitioners will use the traditional Knowledge on local dairy farming since a printed volume is available for them.

Notable Community Participation

Planing level, contributions with ideas abd views by the traditional cattle farmers during the baseline survey. During the implementaion contribution in labor and constructing bio-gas units abd cow-sheds. Providing the project with information on knowledge abd practices of traditional diary farming by the farmers. Community contribution in kind is $ 8056

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Promotion of traditional cattle rearing helps develop farming activites provide additional afood and income to the farmers and promotes the use of organic fertilizer in sustainable farming. Introduction of bio gas geeration promotes the use of sustainable alternative energies.

Policy Influence

Results of this project address the MDGs in the area of "Ensuring Environmental Sustainability" through providing examples on adoption of Environmental Friendly Energy practices at Rural Level. This also focuses on the "Conservation of Traditional Knowledge of Sri Lanka" as stated in the National Environmental Action Plan

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Sharing and disseminating informaion among the farmers through a network will pave the way to rpomote public awareness of global environment.

Capacity - Building Component

The project and a forum of farmers bring isolated diary farmers togethr in order to give them a recognition. A bio-gas user network will be formed by the project.

Replication of project activities

There is a possibility of replicating the project activities. The biogas model has gained much interest of the community. Having seen the successful operation of the model, field level extension officers such as agriculture officers and livestock development officers in the area have begun to promote it. Secondly, the methodology applied in the collecting and recording traditional knowledge on dairy farming can also be employed in such attempts in other areas too.

Project Results

Immediate Results (outcomes):

1) 100 farmers have either started or developed the existing small scale dairies resulting in improving
their monthly household income by 25% (About 500 individuals in 100 families)
2) 20 families have been able to reduce their monthly expenditure on domestic fuel comsumption by
50% since they use biogas for cooking.
3) The farmers directly involved in the project (300 farmers) have now been able to use traditional
indigenous medicine for cow diseases by themselves saving the time and money spent on modern
practitioners and modern medicine.

Long Term Results (impact) :

1) Increased common awareness on the use of Bio Gas as an alternative to domestic fuel consumption
would promote the use of environment friendly energies contributing to reducing fossil fuel
consumption (Although a systematic study was not done on this, 60 individuals have already
requested the technical information about the construction of Bio Gas Units)
2) Increased interest on the importance of regenerating traditional indigenous knowledge which helps
conserve and use bio-diversity related traditional knowledge.
3) Availability of a comprehensive volume of tradition knowledge (once in scattered nature) on the
subject in print form, which encourages future studies at broad level.
4) Availability of a comprehensive reference book for the use of local practitioners of cow medicine.
