Raising public awareness on the Importance of the Eastern Mediterranean Passage for Migratory Birds
The Eastern Mediterranean region is Characterized by rich biodiversity and is especially important to the migrating Western-Paleartic Birds passing through the Belen passage.
The Project aims to enhance the protection of these migrating birds who are threatened along their migration routes as well as doing required researches in accordance with International Bonn Agreement (1983) covering Protection of Migrating Wild Species. The Project aims to build the capacity of the local environmental NGOs and and raise awareness among the hunters to prevent poaching of the migrating bird species.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Bird Research Society is the project partner. The Society will train the Eastern Mediterranean to the members of the concerned associations, to teachers and studenst. The training set will include a 100 pieces of slides (films) and explanotary texts. A slide projector and one copy of the training set will be delivered to related NGOs in order they expand the trainning in their region. Besides a meeting will be held in the region to train teachers and pilot schools . Two sets of binoculors and related books will be given to schools' bird-watch groups. Ministry of Forestry is organizing a 'Migrating Birds' Festival in Belen in the first week of October every year. The project team aims to participate in this festival to introduce the project and organize bird-watch trips and kite flying activities. Cafe chats will be held with bird hunters about migrating birds and information about the species of birds whose hunting is banned will given. Furthermore contact will be kept all the time throughout the project period with the authorities of the goverment departments controlling bird hunting.
Notable Community Participation
The project is a local community initiative and has strong local community involvement. It is in line with the Ministry of Environment's project "Bird Migration Road", Ministry of Forestry's project "Migratory Birds Festival in Belen" and the National Biodiversity Strategy.
