Water of life (Solar water-heaters and water-distillers installations for demonstration of an opportunity of energy of the sun use for household needs in Arals Seas area on an example of Karateren and Tastak villages)
Aral sea naked of more than 33 thousand square kilometers of its bottom, covered by salt hashed with the rests of chemical substances, before applied with the purposes of increase of productivity of agricultural cultures and then washed off by the rivers Amu Darya and Sur-Darya in Aral sea. The thermal contrast, arising everyone day, between steppe, deserted district and water surface of the sea derivates local winds. They mix up with high-altitude winds of planetary character, gear up and rise in air thousand tons of rests from the sea and carry them out on thousand kilometers, which then drop out on ground, cover it and make unsuitable for vegetation, typical of the given district. All this conducts to climate change, further land degradation and intensive dezertification of the territories, decrease biological variety of flora and fauna. Karateren and Tastak villages are at the centre of the Aral ecological accident. They have vast difficulties in a part of maintenance of the population with drinking water. The sickness rate of the population is very high. Here sickness rate level is almost twice higher, than in other regions over Kazakhstan. Because of high tariffs for electrical energy and high costs of coal the local population has large problems with heating of water for cooking, washing utensils and linen, bathing of the people.
The Project will allow to lower the charge of mineral and vegetative fuel, thus having suspended barbarous cutting down of saxsaul, and also it will supply the local population with a pure drinking and hot water in the warm period of year (spring - summer - autumn). The project will be realized with active participation of the local population and local authorities at all stages of the project - assembly of solar collectors on a place, their installation, adjustment.
The goal of this project is to develop solar water heating and desalination facilities. It will demonstrate the ways that solar power facilities can meet household needs in the villages of Tastak and Karateren, in the Aral region. The project will 1) provide sustainable solar electricity to Tastak village (wholly) and Karateren village (partially), in order to create potable and cooking water; 2) raise the environmental awareness of the local people and will foster eco-friendly attitudes; will promote the use of renewable power sources; and will disseminate information about the successful experiences of solar energy.
This project will be implemented by an NGO from the Aral area, with complete assistance from community members, experts from the private solar company. The patent owner will transfer the right to freely use the solar patents for three of the systems and a provide a package of technical documents to the grantee. This can be used in the future to develop the small-scale manufacture of solar water heaters and distillers for local people living in the Aral area
Expected results:
1. Creation of an evident demonstration example showing advantage of use of renewed sources of energy.
2. Guaranteed maintenance of the inhabitants in 2 villages with pure drinking and hot water during spring?summer-autumn time.
3. Increase of a level of ecological education of the population.
4. Active involving of the local population into the decision of ecological problems and problems of maintenance of a healthy image of life, improvement of quality of life of the local population and decrease of a level of sickness rate.
5. Increase of a role of local NGOs in the ecological problems solving with the further activization of their activity.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
During the project implementation the following initiatives will be implemented to enhance public awareness: meetings will be organized to heighten the awareness of the local people about project goals and objectives; leaflets and a booklet about the project and about the solar systems will be developed, published and disseminated; three training workshops will be organized for local people and the authorities on the use of the equipment; a workshop in the villages will be organized on the project outcomes; canvassing will be carried out, and video materials about the project will be produced; and information about the project will be placed on a web-site
Capacity - Building Component
Implementing this project will improve the capacity of the grantee and will strengthen cooperation between the NGO and the private company. The local people gain experience in the manufacturing and installation of solar water-heaters and solar water-distillers. This knowledge can be used in the future for duplicating the project in other villages in the Aral area.
