Protecting the Biodiversity of St. Kitts and Nevis
The Overall goal of the project is ?to conserve the biodiversity of St. Kitts-Nevis.
The project objectives are:
- Improve understanding of the country?s land based flora and fauna ? distribution, abundance, and conservation status- with a special emphasis on endemic species and medicinal plants;
- Develop capacity to monitor the country?s biodiversity, and influence decision-making so as to avoid or reduce potential impact from development or mismanagement;
- Increase public awareness about St. Kitts-Nevis biodiversity and develop an interest in residents and local groups and institutions (a constituency) for its protection; and
- Identify species with economic and cultural significance with a view to promoting and developing their sustainable use.?
The Project activities will include:
(i) Preparation of a national species list indicating the conservation status, distribution and abundance of the island's flora and fauna;
(ii) Preparation of an ecosystem classification and map and the identification of threats posed to each ecosystem.
(iii) Capacity Building on plant collection techniques and on medicinal uses of plants as well as in any other pertinent areas requiring training such as biodiversity monitoring and management.
(iv) Public awareness campaigns to raise public interest in biodiversity protection.
