Khura Forest Training & Development Centre.
The forests around Khura Village in Soon Valley were under tremendous threat for collection of fuel wood especially the key species of the area, Kahu (Wild Olive) and Phulai (Acacia). The forest was not only being plundered by the residents of Khura but also by residents of surrounding villages. Both these species being slow growing could not establish themselves against the pressure for firewood whose impact was multiplied because of heavy grazing pressure. This was the time when the village elders sat together and decided to take some actions to protect their forest. As a first step they thought that they adopt these trees and Baba Ji, the eldest among the lot, said that from now on Phulai is my son and Kahu is my daughter and if any body harms these two species I will consider it as a personal attack and shall consider that person as a personal enemy. Later on they adopted a more systematic approach and formed village forest protection committee that meets every Friday after Friday prayers and fine those people who have damaged the forest during the week. The stolen wood is confiscated and given to the mosque for its use whereas fine is collected and used for the development-related activities in the village. In the meanwhile they also convinced the forest authorities that they should not send their forest guard in the forests of Khura, as he was found involved in the illegal cutting of trees from the forest. Now all residents of the village, forest department and local Union Council recognize the role of this committee and abide by its rules and are meeting their fuel requirements by using wood of those species that are abundant. GEF-Small Grants Programme is providing them support to establish a training centre to train more people in the valley to replicate their model for conservation of forest.
