Documenting the oral and written history of the domesticated plant species in Palestine

The project will document and conserve the culture and history of the Palestinian plant species through collect the oral and written history and information i.e. poems, holly books, stories, popular and wise sayings which are ingerited over many generations. The project will also animate the use of the cultural plants particularly whose of medical and nutritional value through raise the community awareness by conducting workshops and producing outreash material i.e. booklet and calendar to be used for promoting Eco-tourism as well.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

During information collection and meetings between the local community and project team their will be chance to talk about biodiversity and it's relation with the palestinian domesticated plants.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Raising public awareness for the local society and tourists on the historical, medical and economical importance of the Palestinian heritage plants as an a natural resources by meeting the local community in 5 villages and publishing a book (2000 copy) and calendar (2000 copy). In addition to that conducting a final workshop to represent the project results and distributes the book and calendar.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Raising public awareness on the medical use of the Palestinian domesticated plants and increasing there understanding on the importance of the biodiversity as a natural resource will assist in conserving these plants. Publishing the book and calendar on oral and written history of the domesticated plant sp. in Palestine is a very valuable scientific addition to the environmental awareness of the universities, schools, all environmental institutions, Bethlehem 2000, Ministry of Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Higher Education and etc.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The old and young people in 5 villages will participate through giving the project team all the oral and written information they have on the medical and economical importance of the domesticated plants.

Notable Community Participation

The project forms 5 committee in 5 villages to facilitate the work between the project team and the community. These committees are involve in developing project framework through meetings and field surveys, they play very essential role in richening the project data in addition to the scientific references and participate in the evaluation workshop.

Project Results

Environmental benefits: The project added on the accumulation of the oral history documentations on the wild and cultivated species in the West Bank.
Information access: Raised people awareness on the importance of native plants biodiversity through producing and distributing 2000 copies of four years calendar about the Palestinian plant species which documented the traditional sayings in each month of the year. It distributed 1000 copies of the book on documenting the finding of the field survey and the literature review on the oral and written history of the wild and agricultural plants i.e. pomes, holly books, and stories, popular and wise sayings that are inherited over many generations. The book also stimulated the use of the cultural plants particularly whose medical and nutritional value and included maps and photos to demonstrate the plant distribution
