Capacity - Building Component

Building the capacity of 75 farmers (15 of 75 by practicing), and 60 by conducting 9 training workshops on the environment-friendly agricultural methods and arraigning some project site visits.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Distributing 3 posters for 75 participants, 2-booklets/ poster and other materials and conducting 9 workshops for 75 participants.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Reducing 30% of pesticides and compost costs, Increasing farmers income through producing healthy production according to the global (FAO) standards, reducing health risk through reduction the chemical pesticides and improving soil fertility and reducing it?s salinity.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The Palestinian society in this region depends on the agriculture sector. The land is owned by farmers, some families owned 20 dunums and from 2-3 dunums for other families. 15 farmers and their families will benefit directly from this project and 60 farmers will be benefited from indirect way.

Notable Community Participation

The community are farmers, they are involving in whole project process through defining the participants, selecting the suitable method with the project team, exchanging" information, experience and training needs", participating in farmer to farmer technique, facilitating the project team field visits, providing samples for testing and participating in monitoring and evaluation.

Project Results

Environmental Benefit: For the first time in Palestine the project succeeded to demonstrate an alternative natural and biological agricultural pest controlling methods among these are soil solarization, garlic and pepper powder, orange oil. The project illustrated a major shift from the chemical intensive agricultural practices that leads to threatening loss of soil fertility.
Capacity building: The project helped to directly nourish the socio-economic conditions of around 30 farmers from Jericho and Tulkarem villages by freely distributing nylon for solarization, organic fertilizers and cucumber seeds for 2 seasons.
Income: A significant increase in the farmers income has occurred due to the approximate decrease of 50% in the production cost .
Replication: This project has been replicated in many other agricultural communities in Gaza and West Bank with the SGP funding.
