Education, awareness and Training on Environment (EATE)
The project is designed to develop educational and training materials in Urdu for GEF/SGP partners and providing training to NGOs/CBOs in proposal writing and creating awareness on issues of concern to GEF and organize orientation workshops for GEF/SGP.
Project goals or objectives:

1.Development of educational and training materials in Urdu for key partners, of GEF/SGP;

2.Orientation about GEF/SGP focal areas and training for proposal development in ten different cities with collaboration of GEF/SGP partner organizations.

Activities to be carried out under project:

1.Development of Reading Materials
There is lack of quality reading material about Environment especially in Urdu. Sanjh intends to develop local body of literature in Urdu, so that common people and GEF/SGP partners come to know about global and local issues of Environment in simple and intelligible language. Description of the proposed materials is given below.

i.Development, Poverty and Environment----Global perspective on Environmental degradation:
During the last century human beings opted for such development which not only increased poverty but also proved to be dangerous for the natural environment. The proposed booklet will highlight the historical perspective of environmental degradation and establish relationship between development, poverty and Environment. It would be a brief booklet of 25-30 pages and it will cover major environmental issues like global warming, loss of bio-diversity, desertification, pollution and depletion of ozone layer etc. The approach would be to highlight problems, identify solutions and to elaborate by giving case studies.

ii.State of Environment in Pakistan:
It would be a booklet of 25-30 pages about overall situation of Environment in Pakistan with focus on major problems. It will describe current state of environmental degradation in Pakistan and relevance of community based initiatives for environment protection. In addition it will contain lists of resource persons, books, brochures and institutions working for environment. Environmental policies and legislation will also be given with reference to National Conservation Strategy, and Bio-Diversity Action Plan.

iii.GEF/SGP Brochure:
This would also be a booklet of 25-30 pages. It will give background of GEF/SGP, its history, management structure, sources of funding, implementation arrangements of global and national programme, areas of GEF/SGP concern, type of support provided to the NGOs/CBOs and procedure for seeking grants/support. The booklet will also contain list of GEF/SGP projects in Pakistan. A comprehensive NGO Kit will also be designed to provide relevant information to prospective grant seekers in a handy way.

iv.How to develop a project proposal:
It has been observed that community based organizations and local NGOs do have innovative ideas and sensitization about environmental issues but they are unable to convert them into workable project proposals. This booklet of 25-30 pages will provide guidance to the NGOs/CBOs for conceptualization and development of project proposals.

Each story will be no more than 1500 words and will be accompanied by a fact page containing maps, photos, logo, fact table etc. Sanjh will partially cover the cost of the production by marketing the book.

vii.Newsletter:
Objective of the newsletter is to disseminate information about successful community initiatives in environment and development and to share with activists news and views on current global trends in alternative development models. This eight page newsletter in Urdu will also serve as a watchdog to government policies and projects with a view to make them environment friendly. Case studies of successful projects will also be published and interesting solutions of various environmental problems will be highlighted. Environment activists, NGOs, Govt. departments, media people, donors and GEF/SGP staff and partners will be the main contributors and beneficiaries of the newsletter. Visuals of threatened species and successful programs will also be included. The calendar and the greeting cards will help in networking, resource mobilization information sharing and creating awareness.

After tea the selected 20 - 25 participants will form small groups each of which will then choose a real life example to study and build their proposal and projects around. In addition to the variety of scenarios available, participants will be able to develop their proposals on the different environment issues.

Street Theatre:
SANJH is an experimental theatre group, with commitment to exploring creative possibilities in traditional, classical and post modern theatrical schools. Established in 1985, by a group of committed, enterprising and ingenious individuals, SANJH has championed the cause of portraying serious social issues in creative formats and heralded the revival of a thought provoking, original, local and people oriented theatre. Sanjh has many plays at the national and international level to its credit during the last fifteen years. Sanjh has represented Pakistan in five international theatre festivals in the last five years.

Theatre is medium where one can communicate with the audience directly. The feed back received from the audience can be utilized to ensure if the message is received as intended or not. This medium can be effectively used to reach different sections of the society with the message of development and environment protection. It can raise critical socio-economic & environmental issues amongst its audience for purpose of awareness and taking action for a change in their circumstances.

In the absence of mass literacy, theater emerges as one of the most effective medium, which can support empowerment of people. Through the message of Social Mobilization for Environment and Development a process of change can be initiated. Audiences can become aware and articulated regarding their rights and duties and can be oriented towards change for betterment.

The goals of our theatrical activities are to build and/or respond to the needs of grass-roots communities in order to educate and empower them to identify and achieve their needs and rights. However, we do not ignore that 'aesthetic criteria is not irrelevant in understanding and appreciating the value and/or impact of grass root initiatives being attempted by voluntary organizations'.

Proposed Scope of Work:
The work will include the following tasks:
Review different media reports highlighting environmental issues.
Study and Review of the GEF/SGP reports and documentation
Evolving a Script of play, which will include different aspects of Environment issues, and other GEF/SGP concern areas
Performance of the Play to enable the audience assess the current scenario of environment
Conducting the training workshops on "using the theatre for change, imparting the theatrical skills" to the collaborating NGO's/CBO's of GEF/SGP

Work Methodology:
The work methodology will include reviewing the available material, Evolving the script, Performing the play and Questioning/Answering techniques to create consciousness among the audience.

The Sanjh Theatre Group will be responsible for managing the work from the design to the performance stage. The Sanjh team will also read the required documents to be familiarized with the GEF/SGP approach towards the issue. The Sanjh will evolve, rehearse and perform the play.
