Celebrating Indigenous People's Day by the Centre for Eco Cultural Studies

Implementing a review of strategies on Indigenous knowledge made so far, exchanging of knowledge through discussion and debate, recording and publishing information gathered, compiling a compendum and directory of persons with indigenous knowledge/expertise. The project aim was to build concensus on indigenous knowledge issue through a consultative process. Several workshops with the participation of NGOs, Ministry Officials, civil society and prominent individuals who are knowledgeable in this area were invited for the workshops and for the compiling of all information gathered.

Project Results

The project was coordinated by the NGO - CES and facilitated by the Bio Diversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. A widely participated (over 150 participants) 3 day workshop was held at the CES training centre in Sigiriya - a World Cultural Heritage site.

After this public debate a first draft of the national policy on traditional knowledge was tabled for disucussion.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of E&NR, a public hearing on the national policy on traditional knowledge took place attended by NGOs and officials from different related Ministries. Consequently, it was decided that the policy should be published in daily newspapers to obtain the ideas of the general public, before taking the issue further.

As a result of this work on IK, the NGO networked with IPGRI Malaysia who is interested in building partnerships with GEF/SGP globally. The NGO and IPGRI in partnership with the Ministry of E&NR, conducted a workshop at Sigiriya on traditional knowledge documentaion; the technical support was provided by IPGRI Malaysia.

Subsequently two GEF/SGP partner NGOs were invited to the workshop on IK coordinated by CPMT New York in conjunction with IPGRI and the relevant Ministry in Malaysia. CES was one partner while the other was Podujana Himikam Kamituwa of Ingiriya Sri Lanka.
