The 2 boilers of 80 kW total capacity and required installation were successfully installed in homeless shelter in Gliwice Bojkow. In animals shelter in Gliwice Sosnica, the installation and 140 kW thermal power boilers were installed.
There were many barriers in the course of the project, both legal and technical. The project end was suspended two times, due to unexpected troubles. The project manager, Mr. J.Kolodziejczyk, after funds expiration for his post left in September 2001. The Polish Ecological Club board had to take over the responsibility for project completion.
PKE had to quickly learn how effectively co-operate with other ? differently profiled NGO (St. Brother Albert Association-TBA) and the municipal company. There was, and still is a full synergy between PKE and TBA activities. This project facilitated the co-operation among social and charity NGOs in Gliwice.
The municipal company observes big savings on traditional fuel and job costs. There is MZUK?s representative opinion that even one another boiler of 60kW could be fuelled from waste wood in Gliwice in order to use all available wood from trees and other greenery maintenance. At the present time all excess greenery waste is composted, so there is no wood removal problem.

From financial point of view, the animal shelter has yearly costs of 600 000 PLN, while savings due to fuel replacement are equivalent to 40 000 PLN. Before biomass fuel was implemented the oil fuelled boiler was used there, with significant share of used oils as a fuel with substantial CO2 and NOx emission. In TBA shelter, before replacement of fuel, 20 tons of coal yearly were needed to heat the building and to produce hot water. The financial savings equal 10 000 PLN per year.

Due to fuel replacement in shelter for homeless in Gliwice Bojkow estimated 98 Mg of CO2 emission were avoided. In the shelter for animals in Gliwice Sosnica, estimated 126 Mg of CO2 emission were avoided. The costs per 1 ton (Mg) of emission reduction was 693 PLN/ton and 445 PLN/ton respectively.

There are secondary long term effects of this particular project. It can serve as a model of cooperation between municipality and ecological NGO. Some elements have been already partly duplicated in Kuznia Raciborska.
The outputs of the project are sustainable ? the wood chips are being delivered by Municipal company and both heating systems are using this biomass for space heating and hot water supply.
As a project follow up, the St. Brother Albert Association (TBA) for homelessness has already planted 14 hectares of energy willow in a neighboring village.
