According to an evaluation exercise carried out with the participants and the stakeholders, the capacity and technical capabilities of the stakeholders, NGO?s and CBO?s in wetland reserve management; conservation and sustainable use were accomplished. Furthermore the capacity of key NGO?s in design, planning and implementation of environmental educational programmes for the younger generations and multipliers were also attained. The use of the Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary as a model site where appropriate facilities and environment can be utilized, therefore justifying its preservation, was achieved by virtue of the uses of the facilities and environment generated by the project. The project established a firm basis for preserving the Bird Sanctuary against pressure from reclamation and development.
A group of approximately 50 was formed to take part in the management, conservation education and sustainability. Amongst this group there were significant differences in preliminary levels of expertise and commitment and in the perceived motivation influencing their participation and support. Workshops were held in wetlands management, environmental education and sustainability. By the end of the project the core group was continuing to take part in a range of activities including help with education and awareness, contribution in time to servicing members of the public, contributing to landscape and design, website design and establishment and other key activities in the bird sanctuary. However it was also clear that specific skills for improving and continuing the management of the sanctuary would need to be sourced from professional fields where key designs such as exhibition design and construction are required. In summary the technical capacity and skills of the group were enhanced to the point where certain activities could be handled almost exclusively by group members, but some specialist skills are still required above and beyond this core group.

By the end of the project period there had been no drop out from these participants and they had contributed in a variety of ways both to the operation and sustainability of the sanctuary. Representatives of the various NGO?s also attended the training workshops on wetlands management, education and awareness techniques and sustainability and financing.
The bird sanctuary was used as a model site for holding various activities. Discussions were also with the private sector on the possibility of using the drainage canal adjacent to the sanctuary as a demo site for water treatment engineering and technology. The existence of solid waste collection facilities and the new installation during the project phase of litter traps for reducing litter inflow provides further opportunities for projecting the sanctuary as a model.
