This project aims to ensure the sustainability of fish stocks in the Rodrigues lagoon and reef habitats. This is being achieved by conducting research to assess the current status of fisheries, fish populations and habitats, proposing management strategies, and implementing pilot studies on the use of alternative techniques. Sensitisation of local fishers to the negative impacts of existing methods is being undertaken, and dialogue established and training given to promote uptake of the alternative strategies. The project also aims to support the incomes and long term security of fishers by encouraging sustainable exploitation to conserve fish stocks and their habitats. It will ensure that a good understanding of reef fish populations and the implications of artisanal fishing activities has been obtained and communicated to the local community. Measures to reduce negative impacts will have been evaluated, and applicable strategies and long term monitoring protocols compiled into a management plan. Training will provide the community with the necessary skill base for future work. GEF/SGP grant will be used for the following activities: a first research phase to obtain baseline data; a taxonomic inventory and biodiversity analysis of fish species in Rodrigues and evaluation of fish populations and habitats in situ. Pilot studies of appropriate alternative fishing techniques will then be undertaken, leading to the formation of a workable management plan for artisanal fisheries, including provision for future monitoring. At all stages, training and practical experience in the techniques used will be offered to stakeholders. Those with leadership skills will be invited to become trainers for their peers.
