Murehwa Biodiversity Action Programme wetlands Rehabilitation and Management
The ward 8 in Murehwa district has a population of about 12000 and approximately 2400 households. In the distrit poverty classification in terms of food supply ward 8 is considered as the second poorest communal area. The project involves the restoration of the biodiversity in Ward 8 of Murehwa District through engaging in various activities which include afforestation/reafforestation, wetlands protection, gulley reclamation and construction of fuel efficient stoves. For the livelihood aspect, the community is going to establish 4 consolidated gardens which will enable the participants to produce vegetables for consumption and for sale. The group gardens will also help in addressing the problem of stream bank cultivation and siltation of the rivers in the area since the individual gardens are going to be relocated. The group also envisages to start beekeeping once the woodlots are established.
objectives
-to establish "Primary Environmental Care Groups " in the form of community based developed networks whicgh will plan , implement and coordinate environmental projects in their villages
-to introduce locally manuactured improved Chingwa stoves that will reduc fuel wood consumption in at least 15 families per village
-to establish 5 eco nurseries in Kondo,jAKOPO, GUMIRA, GOSHA,AND MADYAMURU.
-to protect 4 wetlands
-to establish 4 consolidated gardens in gumira, jakopo, gutu and madziya
-to reclaim 19 gullies in jakopo, chitate, gutu, dizha, madziya and gumira.
-to plant 5000 trees per village with 2/5being indiegenous trees in all the 14 villags.
-to ensure the provision of 4 fish ponds in wetland protected areas and the egagement of 3 household in beekeeping per village.
specific results
-by the end of the project 60% of the households will actively be participating in environmental projects , deforestation ande soil erosion reduced by 25-30% and the biodiversity increased by 10 %.
activities
-establish C.B.D.N AND MANAGEMENT COMMITTEEE
-afforestation and reafforestation
-wetland protection
-consoildated gardens

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
In order to strengthen the area of community participation the programme will support the formation of Community Based Development Networks (CBDN) int he 14 participating villages. In each of the development networks, community representatives (animators) shall be trained and will be responsible for consietising their respective villages on biodiversity protection and will facilitate the area of report compilation and submission to GEFSGP. This will ensure that communities themselves play a pivotal role in tracking project performance and delivery on the ground.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Primary stakeholders of the project are the local people in Murehwa. The fact that the project will train community representatives (animators) from the area and capacitate to work with their respective groups will result in signficant participation of the local people.
