Crayfish protection in the Middle -East Poland
In early 1970 crayfish (Astacus astacus,L.), listed on IUCN Red BOOK as endangered species and Astacus leptodacttylu,Esch.) were dominant specien in rivers,ponds,lakes dominant of this part of Poland.In 1970s aggressive use of fetilizers and pesticides, local pollution comng from local milk-diaries and alcohol distillieries, also on greater scale -by industry, the lack of modern and in pproper quantati -sewage treatment plants and intensive melioration caused withdrawal of native crayfish, replaced by very aggresive American crayfish, brought to Europe (Western Pomerania, in 1980s) from USA.Native crayfish is a good indicator of clean water.In 1997 IAA-International Association of Astacologyalarmed about dramatic expansion of American crayfish,existing even in polluted waters.
Main problem to be solved by project is: detailed inventory of all crayfish species, geographical range, pasive protection of existing sites, restitution of native crayfish, using methods worked out in the Warsaw Agricultural University in 1990s.
Educational campaign (lectures, working meetings during restitution works and during inventory) addressed mainly to members of the olish Angling Society, main partner , and to schools. Organizing workshops for governmental administration responsible for nature conservation;
extra task requested by GEF/SGP - first monography of crayfish, to be published together with Naturalist's Club in Swiebodzin (all projects of GEF/SGP should end with such a monography supporting a very unique and the only one in Poland - monographies of species ).it is
