Community awareness raising campaigns on forestry on the occasion of Forestry Day in Viet Nam

The main purpose of the project is to contribute to raise awareness among the local public where the project takes place on forestry protection and biodiversity conservation through organising awareness raising activities to commemorate the special event of Forestry Day in Viet Nam. The project also aims to promote visibility of GEF and GEF/SGP in Viet Nam through mass media by reporting news on the implementation of project activities.
The project major activities to be carried out in the localities where the project takes place include:
- environmental campaigns and contests
- tree planting and video film showings in public areas such as local authority's places, health clinics, schools, streets,...
- talks and policy dialogues between local authority, local relevant agencies and community on local specific issues on forestry protection and biodiversity conservation
- promotion of the participation of local school children in the UN-organised painting contest on the theme "Environment through children's eyes".
- a TV live programme on the theme "the role of community in forest protection and biodiversity conservation".

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

- Organized a training course for 13 representatives of 13 implementing provinces in Hanoi to share about the project implementation - Organized a training for 390 students and young teachers from Biology and Environment faculties (Hanoi University of Science) to join the volunteering activities in local areas. - Final conference was organized in 25 November 2001

Notable Community Participation

The project was supported by the Forestry Development Apartment (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the active implementation of consulting agencies and local authorities, active participation of students in Universities and Colleges The project was supported by the Vietnam TV and the Voice of Vietnam, Center and local newspaper All levels of local authorities supported materially and financially. The project was contributed by hearted participation of the local people as the activities had the great meaning to their lives.

Project Result

An environmental campaign was organised on the occasion of Vietnamese Forestry Day on November 28. 14 localities where the GEF/SGP projects took place were chosen for the implementation of activities on the occasion for the Vietnamese Forestry Day 1. Activities which were organized during the Forestry Day included the followings.
- Growing trees in various public places were organised (schools, health clinics, People?s Committee office, in the street, etc).
- Talks and dialogues were organised on pressing issues in biodiversity conservation, management and protection of forests in local areas.
- Cultural and art activities were organised and films on the topics of biodiversity, forest management and protection were shown.
- A campaign on environment sanitation in the community was organised.
- Programs on bio diversity and forest protection as well as local environment issues were broadcast on the commune loudspeakers.
A Dialogue on the role of the community in forest management and protection was broadcasted on national TV. There were representatives of the director of the Forestry Development Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), President of Vietnam Forestry Science and Technology Association, representatives from Vietnamese Association of Biology, and a grantee from the GEF/SGP project which took place in Gia Van commune, Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh province.
- Communications products were designed and distributed in the community.
- The project in cooperation with the ?Young Pioneers? newspapers and the Vietnam Arts Association effectively deployed the competition of ?Environment in the children?s eyes?. The Competition organising committee received over 6,000 items for the competition.

2. The event attracted the attention of the national and local media. During the campaign, Vietnam TV station broadcast 8 pieces of news on the activities in different localities. Hanoi TV station broadcasted the news and a newsreel about the occasion. Simultaneously, the reporters from national newspapers, i.e. Labor, People, New Hanoi, Present Countryside, Science and Nation, Youth, Agriculture, News of Vietnam News Agency) came to the related localities to write about the occasion. Also, the Radio and TV stations as well as the newspapers in the provinces of the project actively participated in sending news about the project.

3. The events contributed to:
- Raising awareness of the public on environmental issues in general and forest protection in particular
- Strengthening skills of GEF/SGP grantees in organising awareness-raising activities
- Promoting visibility of GEF/SGP

The project was to conduct awareness-raising activities on enviornemntal days. Therefore, there is clear no link with sustainability, replication, scaling up, linkage with GEF initiatives and policy link.
